An extraordinary conference/retreat event… A remarkable group of pioneers, visionaries and teachers are gathering at Santa Fe, New Mexico USA, in October, where The Academy of Culture Ambassadors is hosting the first WISDOM FOR MODERN WORKPLACES© retreat on 3-4 October 2017. Attendance is limited to 150 people to optimize interaction. I am trying my best to be there too, as a delegate. The Academy says: “This may be the most engaging, interactive, meaningful, and useful conference on workplace culture that you have ever attended..”  If you are passionately interested in the future of work and organizations, from all the good and sustainable angles, then this might be a wonderful way to empower yourself and grow towards your dreams. Here are brief profiles of the 26 speakers.

What colours are the days of the week?… I have long imagined that the days of the week are certain colours (or colors in US-English..) and I wonder how many people also imagine this?.. Perhaps ask people and compare and discuss. Besides being fun and interesting this is a quirky activity to use as an ice-breaker at training events or classes and groups, and at a deeper level, the exercise very quickly demonstrates how our minds work and think differently – that we so easily can see the same things in different ways, and that the same things can have different meanings for each of us.. (see the ‘days colours exercise’)

Our ‘cafe space’ is happening… We offer a space for people to come and sit and ‘be’ – to drink tea and coffee, eat cake or buttered toast, for free – especially people feeling low or sad, or empty or needing a hug, or worse, for whatever reason, such as bereavement, anxiety, or due to some other stresses of life.

So much of modern life is rather unnatural.. not what we are designed for. We tend to adapt and conform, because most of what we see and read and experience persuades us that this is how life should be. But life does not have to be like the TV or the extremes that we see in the media. Life can be more natural and giving and loving. We can be more vulnerable and yet stay perfectly safe. We can choose to value and enjoy and feel every present moment, rather than striving and longing for things in the future. Because we only really have today. None of us knows or can control what happens in our future. We can only hope to control our responses – and welcome everything that comes as part of life and how we grow.

Having experienced in recent years the deaths/suicide of loved ones, a difficult protracted divorce, life-threatening stress, and my own fight for survival and recovery, I am now keen to make a helpful space for others… Businessballs is based in Anstey, Leicester, in a simple spiritual 18th century farmhouse. It’s been my family home and workplace since 1991, and has become workplace for my daughter Nel and son Alex, who respectively run their own hair salon and tattoo studio businesses in the house. We serve free teas and coffees, homemade cakes, and increasingly other foods. It’s free. We have a space here that seems to help people who might be struggling with bereavement or mental health challenges of one sort or another. If you live locally and want to drop in and simply sit, be, chat, have tea/coffee/cake, or read, or laugh or cry or hug, then please call in. Our address is given in the contact details for this website. Later this year I aim to organize quite an ambitious event to raise awareness and break taboos, share experiences, feelings, expertise, knowledge, thinking and ideas – professionally and personally – about suicide, death, bereavement, mental health and wellness. If this is of interest to you please get in touch. There is much to be done, and much that we can do. Thank you, Alan Chapman (updated 1st June 2017)

How to increase wellness and and happiness… Our minds and bodies are designed to live very differently to how modern life is – i.e., cars, planes, buildings, computers, smartphones, processed food, chemicals and drugs, automatic everything, vast organizations, inactivity and obesity, disconnected families, and unloving relationships, etc. Our minds and bodies are actually designed to live how humans lived thousands and millions of years ago, i.e., walking, running, playing, singing, dancing, growing things, tending animals, fresh air and countryside, swimming, making things with our hands, using our entire bodies in one way or another, eating naturally, sleeping naturally, being in harmony with nature, staying connected with family and social groups, hugging, touching, laughing, crying, dying naturally – free of modern stress, free of materialistic consumerism, and free of searching for an artificial security and ‘happiness’. Humans generally today live very unnaturally, in ways that do not match how we have actually evolved, and what our minds and bodies need. Consequently we become stressed and unwell, and we take alcohol and drugs, and become addicted to electronic media, and we chase more money and possessions. Of course we cannot go back in time, and modern life offers many benefits, nevertheless we can look to our past for some very simple ideas – even if we make just one little change – that would obviously and easily improve our life-balance, especially if we are not well and happy. It’s very simple.. Just imagine how people lived before the industrial age, or before the agricultural age, and try to
