George Town is a neighborhood situated in the north of Chennai. It is also known as Muthialpet and Parry’s corner. George Town spreads roughly from Chennai Central railway station and People’s Park or Park Town in the west to the Bay of Bengal in the east. To the north is Basin Bridge and Royapuram while Fort St George borders it on the south. It is a historical area of Chennai city from where its expansion began in the 1640s. It was here that the first settlement of Madras was set up and also housed the East India Company’s warehouse. As the area developed with trade, it became the center for construction and development activities, including one of the major ports of Madras. Other prominent localities situated close to George Town are Washermanpet, Kolathur, Choolai, Kalyanapuram, Anna Nagar, Pullapuram, Jamalia, Konnur, Siruvallur, Chennai City, Nungambakkam, Royapettah among others. Broadway is the only arterial road which passes through the center of the locality. Major roads of the neighborhood include Netaji Subash Chandra Bose Road (popularly known as China Bazaar Road), Rajaji Salai (formerly First Line Beach road) and Wall Tax Road. The longest street is Mint Street, which starts near Central Railway Station making way across the neighborhood for about 4 km towards north and ends near Vallalar Nagar.
NSC Bose Road is commonly known as China Bazaar Road and combines Rajaji Salai and Wall Tax Road on two sides. Armenian Street is one of the most historical streets of Chennai and is locally known as Aranmanaikaran Street connecting Mannady Street and China Bazaar Street on two ends.
It enjoys excellent connectivity to Chennai International Airport which is about 22 km via Chennai-Trichy Highway.
The arterial roads, namely, North and South Beach Roads, Anna Salai, Poonamallee High Road, Grand Northern Trunk Road, and Ennore High Road radiate from the neighborhood.
